Ghana is currently experiencing some
form of economic crisis, be it mild or hash. To an outsider, it appears the
Ghana film industry is immune from the current economic crisis because the
price of movie has remained the same GHc5.00. But to an active participant
that’s far from reality. If you decide to
look at the Ghana film industry from the point of a manufacturing industry the
picture becomes clear.
Film producers also incur cost of
production just as a manufacturer. The producer pays cast, drivers, crew, rents
buildings etc. The producer also pays for the post production cost which in
manufacturing is referred to as Administrative expenses or Sale and
Distribution expenses.
Enough of the Accounting, let talk
film economics, when you talk to the film marketers and distributors you
understand the economics behind it.
The cost of films from the producers
to the distributors had gone up by some pesewas but luckily for the Ghanaian
film consumer, this cost has not been passed on to him. So he continues to buy his films at GHc5.00.
I see the Ghana film industry as charitable in
terms of pricing, it behooves on us all to support the industry no matter how
shoddy we label the films, it the sure way to grow the industry.
Least I forget, Kwaw Ansah’s films
sale at GHc10.00, it comes with a special seal on it. I will avoid the
economics of Kwaw Ansah’s. Sharparrows,
slamming out of here.
