FILMWRIGHT OR PLAYWRIGHT

Screenwriters are envious of playwrights; because playwrights occupy prestigious positions.

The playwright is paid royalty not salary and wines with the theatre production executives; from start to finish of his play he is consulted and respected.

So the Filmwright or screenwriter if you like- enviously looks at the playwright, hoping for a playwright-status from a film production company.

Shockingly for Ghana, the playwright is in a more miserable condition than the screenwriter. For the playwright the theatre houses [national theatres] are beyond his means. The cinema houses that the playwright can afford are in worse condition.

An Accra-based can visit; Globe Cinema-Accra, Dunia Cinema-Nima, Orion Cinema-Circle, Roxy Cinema-Accra [somehow in good condition], Rex Cinema-Tema station, Cem Cinema-Alajo [Demolish to make way for the odo river], or visit any in your region, you will wail within if you love cinema.

So the playwright with nothing, hope and dream of a theatre to stage his craft and hope and dream the public might troop in to see; the tragedy of an African playwright, apologies to, Dr. Niye Alabi.

What about the Filmwright? The Ghana film industry is growing with an anticipated work for a screenwriter. Since most filmmakers are screenwriter, an ordinary screenwriter is considered with contempt. He is made to understand the movie will be made, without his script, so he better put up or shut.

Because they share the same fate, the Filmwright looks at the playwright neither smiling nor envying. What is the way out of this quagmire? I leave you with the words of Tom Clancy- Novelist “Keep writing and hope you get lucky, I was.”
