The Making of Stars In The Ghana Film Industry

Who deserve the credit when a star is born? To emerge as a star takes a lot of effort and work. Many outside the film industry think it is simple, and the easiest profession is acting. You only have to be on set to be predisposed of this notion.

Before a star is born he or she has featured in many films. Those who became stars without featuring in many films are a just a few.

Directors with solid background in film-making have the magic wand for turning individuals into a star. Shirley of Sparrow Production did that for Lydia Forson in Scorned and did so for Senanu in Checkmate. Senanu didn’t feature in much films compare to Lydia when he hit stardom.

The Producer works of Abdul Salami of Venus Films, brought star fame to the likes of Majid Michel, Nadia Buari, Van Vicker, Yvonne Nelson and John Dumelo.

All the stars listed above have one thing in common, they were given lead roles and that’s what brought fame to their door step. It doesn’t negate the fact that behind the scene they worked hard.

There is the category, where it is hard to see the single hand of a director or producer in their quest to become stars. They made their entry to stardom wearing the joker’s hat, count Agya Koo, kwaku Menu, Kojo Nkansah in that category. Kojo Nkansah on receiving the award for the Best Supporting Actor in a Lead Role (2013) remarked “Ah! Boys abre”.

We have those who became stars from a well written script, some end-up earning their names from the said films; Lil Wyne- Kojo Nkansah, Ama Ghana- Vivian Jill, Princess Tyra-Yvonne Nelson, Pusher- Adjetey Annah, Kwadjo Boadi- Akrobetu (stage name from key soap concert party days).

The road to stardom has many bumps, be prepared if you are an aspirant. Many are they who crush and burn by the sidewalks.  And in their voices you hear their tears, sweat and struggles; at certain time you can’t hold it than to sit and wail with them.
As you can see, there is no single and easy path to stardom, the exploitation stories are not told here, it can blackened your heart and turn down your ambition.

Before you go out to seek for your position between the stars, take the advice once given by Maame Dokonu (Grace Omaabo) “Make sure you have something doing earning you some money”. Embark on your journey and never look back, c-yah among the stars.
