There have been some matters of
improvement within the Ghana film industry that can hardly escape an ardent
follower of the industry; but to the sharp tongue critique such development
isn’t significant.
Ghana films whether kumawood or
glamour gradually is moving from VCD to DVD. The news is positive and a sign of
improvement for the Ghana film industry. Among its blessing shall be the seeing
of behind the scene shots, it mistakes and it laughter.
Early films on DVD happen with
Laila’s Sinking Sands (2011?) but it appeared the market wasn’t ready enough or
wasn’t sophisticated enough for DVDs. So the subsequent release of Turning
Point Pictures, Ties that Bind (2012?) was on VCD.
Presently, the Ghana film market
is poised and well ready to accommodate films on DVD. The evidence is all over
the market for regular film buyers to see.
Even without a crystal ball, it
can easily be predicted that the days of screaming commercials part 1 & 2!!
will soon be over. The new format for labeling part 1 & 2 is either Book 1
& 2 or Chapter 1 & 2.
PRICING CHOAS
The Ghana film industry again has
a subtle pricing chaos attributed to the dollar malaise in recent times.
The general price for movies
stands at GHc6.00. Film like Potomanto has a price tag of GHc7.00 but selling for
GHc10.00. Lil Wyne and Banku go to
School; has a price tag of GHc7.00 but it is selling for GHc6.00. Devil in a
Dress has a price tag of GHc10.00 but currently selling for GHc6.00.
This is a sample of films with
selling price and tag price variations out of the many other out there. Deliberately
I exclude films with GHc5.00 price tag; the reason is obvious to industry
players.
To make an easy sense out of the
situation you got to visit your lecture notes on economics and take a second
look at the invincible hand theory.
As it is in economics, the
invincible hand –not controlled by anyone- will intervened, push price down or
up to equilibrium. In other words, the forces of supply and demand will
interact to bring price to a point where consumers are willing to buy more and
suppliers are willing to supply more.
I am taking off my hat of
economics and putting on my down-town hat, talk to you another time; am
bubbling away.
